Who are some of the trendsetters in the field of internet of Things?

You may be familiar with them.

 They aren’t something new. They’ve been around for some years now.

What is IFTTT?

IFTTT is a website that provides service integration of web services and internet-connected products that provide open APIs.

IFTTT stands for If This, Then That!

If this happens, do that.

For instance,

as you can see from above,

This = photo is uploaded on Instagram

That = save to Dropbox

This becomes an automation rule, and they call it a recipe.

Users mix and match services to their taste to create recipes.

IFTTT provides over 150 channels for recipes. (based on 2014. 12)

What is Zapier?

Zapier is a web service that provides integration of open APIs.

With over 400 APIs, it provides rich experience to its users in automation.

As they word it, an automation is a Zap.

By selecting an API that would trigger and an API that would take an action as a result, a Zap will be created. It may be more complex than IFTTT but it gives user more freedom of choices that helps businesses manage more efficiently.

Why the spotlight on the two: IFTTT and Zapier?

Even before the excitement of IoT, automation platform has been around.

However, the reasons for the big change in people’s attitude is because of the followings.

Open APIs

Internet of Things is all about connectivity. In other words, isolation will not get any one far. There’ll be more than billions of connections, and collaboration will be the only way to get far and become great. That’s why everyone started opening up.

By integrating services, developers can build faster with less effort. Moreover, as a consequence of integration, more values can be provided to the end users that wouldn’t have been possible before. IFTTT and Zapier are exemplary services that make great uses of integration.

End-user Automation

Increase of the number of open APIs brings bigger possibilities but at the same time more confusion to ordinary users. IFTTT and Zapier wanted to solve this by letting users make the choices of the integration. What was possible with programming before can be done by ordinary users just by following logical steps with their mouse. With the tool in the hands of many, more can be achieved and more creative the automation experience will become.

그 중에 저희가 주목하는 제품이 있는데요, 혹시 들어보셨나요?

IFTTT와 Zapier 입니다!

What is the IFTTT?

If This, Then That!

이프트닷컴(ifttt.com)은 인터넷에 연결되는 제품이나 웹서비스를 연결하여 자동화 규칙을 만들 수 있는 서비스 입니다.

뜻을 그대로 해석하면,

"이(this)러면, 저(that)래라!" 정도가 되지 않을까 싶습니다. 꽤 유용하게 사용될 수 있는 서비스인데,

예를 들어보겠습니다.

이미지에서 보여주는 것과 같이

This = upload photo on 'Instagram'

That = Save to 'Dropbox'

하나의 자동화 규칙이 됩니다. 이런 규칙 하나를 이프트닷컴에서는 레시피(Recipe)라고 부릅니다.

사용자가 자신의 취향에 맞는 서비스(채널)를 골라 섞어서 하나의 조리법을 만드는 것이죠.

재피어(Zapier)에서는 잽(Zap)을 날린다고 표현했네요.^^

어떤 서비스가 Trigger(방아쇠)로써 작용할지 선택하고, 그 Trigger에 따라 Action(실행될 것)을 선정하는 것입니다재피어는 이프트닷컴에 비해 규칙 설정이 조금 까다로운 편입니다. 하지만 그만큼 할 수 있는 것이 더 풍부해서 일반유저층 보다는 주로 비니지스 유저를 타겟으로 자리잡고 있습니다.

왜 이프트닷컴(ifttt.com)과 재피어(zapier)를 왜 주목하는가?

여기서 궁금하지 않을 수 없네요.

사물인터넷 이전에도 이 두가지와 비슷한 개념으로 자동화 플랫폼은 존재했습니다.

저희가 이프트닷컴(ifttt.com)과 재피어(zapier)를 주목하는 이유는 다음과 같습니다.

Open APIs

미래로 나아갈수록 새로운 기술을 개발하는데 많은 시간과 비용이 소요됩니다.

또한 그 결과 또한 불확실하죠.

특히 IT 업계에서는 자신이 개발한 기술을 감추면 감출수록 발전을 저해하는 것이라는 것을 깨달았기 때문일지도 모릅니다.

이제 빠르게 나아가기 위해서는 폐쇠적인 모델로는 성공하기 어렵다는 것은 모두가 아는 상식이 되었고, 이제는 자발적으로 API를 오픈하고 사용을 장려하는 것이 당연한 트렌드로 자리 잡았습니다.
연결성(connectivity)가 생명인 사물인터넷 제품은 거의 모두 Open API 제공하고 있고, 개발자들에게 어필하기 위해 상당히 많은 투자를 하고 있습니다.

개발자는 최소한의 노력만으로 원하는 제품과 서비스를 자신의 제품에 연동할 수 있기 때문에 서로 윈-윈할 수 있는 것인데, 이 덕분에 획기적이고 창의적인 아이디어들로 굉장히 재미있는 서비스들이 많이 등장하고 있죠.

하지만 하루가 멀다하고 수없이 쏟아져나오는 서비스를 일반 사용자들이 받아들이기에는 역부족입니다.

이런 현상은 미래를 지향하면 할수록 더 뚜렷해질 것이구요.

그래서 이 많은 API를 연결하여 새로운 가치를 사용자에게 줄 수 있는 무언가가 필요했는데,

IFTTT나 Zapier는 이 것들을 가장 제대로 활용하고 있는 서비스가 아닐까하는 생각이 듭니다.

End-user Automation

많은 API를 연결한다 하여도 그 수가 점점 더 많아지면 많아 질수록 일반 사용자들은 더 답답해 질수도 있을 것 같습니다.

그래서 IFTTT와 Zapier를 이것들을 연결하는 것을 일반 사용자에게 맡기게 되었습니다.
일반 사용자가 직접 API를 연결하여 자동화 규칙을 만들어 사용하는 것인데, 개발자처럼 프로그래밍 언어로 연결하는게 아니라 간단히 클릭 몇번으로 규칙을 만들 수 있어 IT지식이 별도로 필요가 없는 것이죠.
이런 저런 서비스를 많이 사용하는데 이 서비스간 연동이 절실해 졌다면 IFTTT와 Zapier는 Lifesaver가 아닐까요?
IBM연구소에 따르면 앞으로 10년내에 인터넷에 연결되는 제품이 200억개가 넘는다고 하는데, 개발자들이 이것들을 일일이 연결해주는 것은 불가능 할 것입니다.

당연한 얘기가 되었지만,
연결되는 것이 많아지면 많아 질수록 IFTTT와 Zapier는 더욱더 유용한 서비스가 될 것 입니다.

엠비언시(ambiency)는 PROTA의 애플리케이션 입니다. 그렇기 때문에 사용자의 프로타에서 구동이 됩니다.

그렇기 자동화 서비스를 제공하기 위해 민감한 데이터를 어디 있는지도 모르는 서버에 보내는 일은 없습니다.

프로타는 사용자와 같은 물리적 공간에 존재하기 때문에 웹서비스들이 접근하기 어려운 데이터를 활용할 수 있습니다. 이러한 데이터를 기반으로 더 정확한 자동화 서비스를 제공할 수 있게 되는 것이죠.
